QUEBEC - IT’S UNIQUE!
by
Mark Hayvren
http://www.roadtrekchapter.org/region3/rallies.html
Join us September 9-12, 2010 in the City of Quebec. Founded in 1608,
Quebec has been designated a World Heritage Treasure and
is the cradle of French civilization in North America. Absorb the
history, the architecture, the old world charm and of course the
magnificent food!
We'll stay at the Camping
Turmel in the town of Chateau
Richer located in an area known as the Cote de la Beaupre, on
one of the oldest thoroughfares in North America. Some of the buildings
along the road are three centuries old. Chateau Richer is on the
North Shore of the Saint Lawrence River, 15km east of the Pont (bridge)Pierre
Laporte leading into Quebec City. The campground has full water
and electrical hookups.
Three breakfasts and two suppers will be supplied by a local French
Canadian caterer. For those who have not experienced this type of
cooking, you're definitely in for a treat. On Friday, after a full
breakfast, there's a bus tour of Quebec City (8:30am to 5:30pm).
We'll be visiting many interesting sites and
museums in various locales. Among the probable stops are the Plains
of Abraham where the British General Wolf defeated the French General
Montcalm
and seized the City in 1759; and the Parliament
buildings of the Capitol of the Province of Quebec. At Place
Royalelocated in the heart of the Historic
Lower Town, we'll have about two hours to explore; shop, and dine
in cafes, bistros, or creperies. Our bus tour will continue with
a stop at St. Anne de Beaupre, a basilica that more than 1.5 million
pilgrims visit annually; and a stop at the spectacularLes
Chutes Montmorency . These waterfalls are higher than Niagara
Falls. Saturday is a free day that you might want to use to visit
two nearby historic sites.. There's the oldest commercial flour
mill in
North America, Moulin du Petit Pre where you can take a guided tour
and shop for local organic products. There's a small winery and
restaurant on the premises which overlooks the St. Lawrence River.
Another option is Ile
D'Orleans, an island in the St. Lawrence River,
which is accessed by a bridge. This absolutely charming area combines
rustic beauty with both agri-business and art/handicraft industries.

THE NEXT ROADTREK CRUISE
by Bill Creager

Region 5 is excited to announce another fine
cruise that has become a tradition for our Roadtrek family and friends.
Based
on our post survey from the last cruise, we are complying with our
past cruisers’ comments to up grade our Cruise Line, provide
the
open dining option, visit new ports of calls, improve the quality
of our cruising experience and to do it all, at a great group rate.
You will spend seven days aboard the Holland America ms Nieuw Amsterdam
(new to the Holland line in 2010) departing
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday, March 20, 2011 with ports of
call at Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Island; San Juan
Puerto Rico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten and Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.
We will return to Ft. Lauderdale on Sunday, March 27.
Anybody that knows cruising knows the quality of Holland America.
Isn’t 2011 a long way off? Maybe a little, but to get our
fabulous Roadtrek discount, we needed to commit a little earlier
than normal. Actually, the rates for this ship have already increased
since we arranged this cruise, but Holland America has agreed to
meet their commitment to us. Our rate is an unbelievable $774.00
per person for inside cabin, $874.00 per person for an ocean view
and $1073.00 per person for a balcony. Other cabin categories are
available if desired. These prices include the government fees and
taxes, so there is no additional fees to add to the fares. (Tips,
insurance
and adult beverages are additional expenses.)
More good news! A $175 per person deposit will hold your cabin and
your final payment is not due until January 1, 2011. Any
deposits or fares paid prior to December 19, 2010, can be completely
refunded (minus $25.00) if it becomes necessary to cancel
your cruise. A no hassle refund policy — how refreshing is
that? Consider what you could spend for the same amenities in hotels,
fine restaurants, night clubs or at Broadway type shows. Someone
else does the driving. You would be hard pressed to find a bargain
better than a cruise vacation. When should you book? As soon as
possible. Unlike previous cruises, we have only been able to set
aside
50 cabins for the Roadtrek group. That doesn’t mean that when
they are gone there will not be more available, but we can not promise
that there will be. To book the cruise please contact Carol Ann
at New Horizons Travel Inc. (800) 949-1120 ( carolann@travelnht.com
).
The 800 number should be okay for our Canadian Cruisers. Make sure
you tell Carol Ann that you are booking the Roadtrek Cruise, if
you want
the open dinner seating, and/or if you want to have dinner with
a particular person/s. Our group normally prefers the early seating
for
those that prefer scheduled seating. As always, family and friends
of Roadtrekers are welcome to join us at this event.
In the past, about half of our group were not Roadtrek owners. Possibly
we can convert them.
Your hosts for this cruise will be Edna and Bill Creager. Please
contact us with your questions wscreager@gmail.com or (386) 437-9380.
FORT

by
Lee & Sue Baker and Betty & Jim Weite
Join us for 3 nights and 4 days of camping
at Fort Clinch State Park, located in Fernandina Beach, FL, Thursday,

the 1930’s the CCC began preserving and rebuilding many of
the structures. Tours are held on the first weekend of the month,
with period re-enactors and living historians
depicting garrison life. Bicycling, surfcasting from the ½

of shorebirds can be seen along the park’s Great Florida Birding
Trail and Pavilion. Nearby towns of Fernandina Beach (within bike
riding distance) and the Amelia Island shops are great places to
visit and enjoy lunch. Nice antique shops are also located in the
area.
We will have a potluck dinner Thursday night. Friday will be free
to visit area attractions and we will have complimentary wine &
cheese and snacks around a campfire Friday Evening. On Saturday
we can tour the Fort, the Birding Trail and have time for bicycling

night, weather permitting. On Sunday we will check out but you can
still take time to visit the area.
Make your own camping reservations for Fort Clinch State Park –
www.ReserveAmerica.com or 800-326-3521.

YOUR BAVARIAN GETAWAY
Leavenworth, WA
by
Ken & Judy Stahl
Leavenworth is an inspiring story of a small
Washington town that reinvented itself and today, about 50 years
later is a
charming Bavarian Village nestled beside the winding Wenatchee River
with the rugged 8000 foot high Cascade Mountains providing
a breathtaking background. The Village has a distinctive European
appeal (www.leavenworth.org)
and provides the opportunity for
many entertainment, adventure and recreational activities.
Your Bavarian Getaway, August 6 – 10, will start on Friday,
upon arriving at the Icicle River RV Resort (www.icicleriverrv.com/).
That evening, a discussion of the getaway’s planned events
and cocktails will be followed by a Bavarian theme potluck. So,
it is
time to start planning on what wonderful entrée you will
bring to share. After dinner we will be transported by bus to the
Leavenworth Summer
Theater where the sun falls behind the ridge, the moon rises
over the valley, and Maria descends the hillside
singing “The Hills are Alive.” We will enjoy a signature
Leavenworth experience “The Sound of Music.” a Bavarian
classic.
On Saturday, the day will begin with a light breakfast, then we’ll
travel to downtown Leavenworth by bus to explore and shop.
Our next event will be at Kestrel
Vintners for a taste of wine and to learn about their “The
Lady in Red.” It should then be about time
for lunch at King Ludwig’s (www.kingludwigs.com)
to indulge in a family style platter, which will include Schweinshax’n,
Schnitzel and
several other German favorites. After a busy day, it will be time
for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and stories to share.
Sunday, August 8, will again begin with a light breakfast with wonderful
pastries by Homefires Bakery. Now ready to explore
again, we are on our way to the Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort (www.sleepinglady.com)
where “The music of her rivers, the
fragrance of her trees and the mystery of her rocks, combine to
welcome visitors and restore the human spirit.” Here we will
learn
about the history of Sleeping Lady, enjoy a delicious buffet-style
lunch and then a guided walking tour of artwork, music center and
nature. There is still time to explore, so the next adventure is
the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery for a guided tour. In the
visitor’s
center there is a wonderful painted mural that depicts the spring
Chinook salmon through its challenging life cycle. Here we
will learn about the integral role this hatchery plays in the Icicle
Creek salmon run as they annually release 1.6 million smolts. After
another very busy day it will again be time for cocktails, hors
d’oeuvres and more stories to share.
Our last full day, Monday, will include another light breakfast,
but enough to get us ready for a couple of hours of Boot Camp.
Here we will learn about our Roadtreks and to share the many “how
to do it.” The remainder of the day will be self guided
tours of Icicle Valley and the Cascade Mountains. Our last night’s
dinner will be brats, kraut, and beans; we will then gather around
a
campfire with s’mores for dessert.
On August 10, it will be time to load up our Roadtreks and journey
to FMCA/Roadtrek International Chapter Rally in
Redmond, OR on August 11.

Walk About Canada/Alaska
2011
by
Wendell Nunes
It's not too early to start planning to join Region
8 members and other Roadtrekers on "The Last Great Road Trip".
This “loosey
goosey” trip will take us to “The Last Frontier”,
touring Canada and Alaska for a two month event. Purchase your “Milepost”
now and
plan your trip. Along the way, you can plan on meeting other Roadtrek
travelers at various checkpoints. We will gather at Mile Post Zero,
in
Dawson Creek, British Columbia in late May 2011 and continue at
our own pace. We’ll meet periodically at different locations
such as Tok, Kenai, Anchorage, Denali, Fairbanks, Homer, and finally
Prince Rupert. Consider making this "trip of a lifetime"
knowing that you can choose to travel in the
company of other Roadtrekkers or just meet up with other Roadtreks
at certain points. While en route, you may come across a familiar
Roadtrek van parked alongside a lake and marked with a flag or scarf
inviting others to stop by. If the need arises knowing there are
other travelers you know who could render help provides peace of
mind. This trip will be leisurely and starting in late May has many
benefits.

THANKSGIVING
ROADTREK GET-TOGETHER
by Jim and Sharen Koch
This Thanksgiving consider sharing it with your Roadtrek
family. We’ve discovered a unique RV Park that stages a free
sit-down Thanksgiving dinner as part of a 3-day stay over
that holiday weekend. It is the 5-star Zion River Resort, RV Park,
and Campground
www.zionriverresort.com located
in Virgin, Utah just outside the Zion National Park where Region
8’s caravan terminates on November 24th, the day before
Thanksgiving.
To register and participate, go to www.zionriverresort.com
and familiarize yourself with the facility and the special event
of Thanksgiving Dinner on November 25, 2010. If you have questions,
the two women who are helping us stage this three-day rally are
Donna and Mason.
They can be reached at (888) 822-8594 or emailed at zionrv@zrr.com
. Go to their web page and complete the “Reservation by Credit
Card” link.
In the section “Preference RV Space” mark “Back
in Standard”. Then in the section “Questions and Comments”
indicate you are with the Roadtrek Group. Finally, so further activities
can be arranged, email us that
you’ve registered and how many persons are in your party.
We are getting a special rate from their listed $45/night. Ours
is $38.25 or for the three nights $114.75
Happy Turkey Day!
