SOJOURN TO SEMO (SOUTHEAST MISSOURI)

SOJOURN TO SEMO (SOUTHEAST MISSOURI)

By Myrna Rueff and Joan Craw

June 4-8, 2018

This rally will highlight the French Colonial heritage and natural history of Southeast Missouri. It will include two days of touring. One day will be devoted to guided tours of the quaint town of Ste. Genevieve, MO’S first town (established@1750).  Ste. Genevieve (recently named a National Historic Park!) has the largest number of French Creole buildings in the United States using vertical log (poteaux-en-terre and poteaux-sur-sol) construction.  We will visit several examples of this construction.    Lunch will be at Audubon's Grill and Bar, named for John J. himself, as legend has it, was a merchant in Ste. Genevieve.

The second day of touring will be to the mining area and a natural history area.  The mining is the main reason why the French Colonists settled in the area.  Our first stop will be to visit Missouri Mines State Historic Site and take a tour and boat ride across a lake in an underground mine.  After lunch (included), we will visit two much loved state parks, Johnson's Shut-Ins, with its spectacular chutes and waterfalls confined in canyon-like gorges and Elephant Rocks State Park, picture elephant size red granite boulders, 1.5 billion years old, strewn across a hillside.  This exciting day will be topped-off with a catered Cajun dinner.

You will have one day to explore the region on your own, we will have suggestions, or you can just relax at the campground.  They have a pool, fishing lake and access to a walking trail around a large county lake.
